Hey there, adventurers!
As you may know, the team at 1085 Adventures has recently launched our very own coffee company, 1085 Snowdonia Coffi! This brand of camping coffee currently includes three different roasts, one of which is a very special blend that not only tastes amazing, but has an incredible story behind it.
1085 Snowdonia Coffi 5 is a mild, fruity blend that originates from Guatemala as part of the incredible Asociacion De Productores de Café Diferenciados y Especiales De Guatemala (ASPROCDEGUA). Founded in 2014, the association is a women’s co-op that aims to help small producers in Guatemala to break into the specialty coffee market.
In fact, the co-op represents 664 different producers from across the Huehuetenango region of Guatemala, which is well known for the high quality coffee beans that burst with incredible acidity balanced by soft sweetness. Of these producers, 394 have earned organic certification, ensuring that there is nothing but nature in the crops.
As members of the coffee association, the producers gain access to assistance with developing and improving their agro-ecosystems and ensuring the plantation management is environmentally friendly. The members also have access to technical assistance and the organisation provides additional services such as soil analysis, test farms, and social projects based on food security, education, and nutrition.
Each of the producers has a small coffee plantation of around two hectares, sharing the space with other crops to increase diversification, including guava, cassava, bananas, avocado, oranges and lemons. The small, family-run plantations personally undertake the task of hand-picking the ripe red cherries, ensuring they only select the best beans. Then, the coffee is typically processed right there on the farm, going through pulping, fermenting, washing and drying phases.
For 1085 Snowdonia Coffi 5, the blend uses beans that are grown by eight different women producers across five villages in Huehuetenango. They produce their own beans, each with unique flavour profiles, and send them all to a central location where one expert coffee blender cups each lot, combining similar profiles and qualities together to create the one unique blend.
The result is a mellow, everyday roast that offers hints of red fruits with chocolatey undertones. We’re very proud to support this association with 1085 Snowdonia Coffi 5, available now as beans or grounds in various sizes and packages, including as a coffee subscription option.
